workshop secrets

Denis, founder of OFYL,
reveals its secrets

“I’ve been smart since my childhood. I take pleasure in imagining and designing objects to improve everyday life. When people ask me what I do, I say ‘I’m an inventor’. It’s a passion that has led me to develop products made locally in reintegration workshops around La Rochelle in France.”

Célestin Tuffery created the first French jeans in 1892 to satisfy the needs of workers on the burgeoning rail network. Célestin chose a fabric from Nîmes, giving its name to denim (from Nîmes), creating solid, comfortable and practical trousers. Because these jeans were workwear, it was necessary to equip them with common sense practical details. This is why the coin pocket was created during this epoch. The small pocket placed on the right side of the jeans was actually there to protect a pocket watch, small, fragile and essential objects for workers of the time. It’s a small pocket that is emblematic of jeans and has survived the centuries even though it has lost its original purpose.
